Analysis of a Visual Representation
It has occurred to me how posters of the campaign “Earth Hour” would always catch my attention if I walk on a busy street. The simplicity, the intricate colors, and the graphics all help the message of the poster to become prominent, in my opinion. Over here, I will be discussing about the recent poster released for Earth Hour 2014 (continues to 2015).
Bathed in deep hues of blue with the earth located at the lower margins of the advertisement, the poster brings out a simple image of the earth and the areas of the Milky Way. Right at the center, blocked words in white are written with an inviting message “See you under the stars” with the date written below, gives us the needed information about the event we need in order to be able to participate. Lastly, right at the bottom of the poster, the Earth Hour logo appears, helping us to conclude the message that was sent to us.
The poster has achieved a form of simplicity in its image, making it quick and easy for us to understand what it means, especially with the Earth Hour logo. The Earth Hour is a campaign that encourages us to turn off our lights and power for an hour or more in the evening, in order to promote a greener environment and reduce light pollution and excessive use of electricity.
The Earth Hour campaign has brought immense knowledge and awareness around the globe for its purpose. Many countries have contributed their efforts into making the campaign successful, such as turning off the city lights; thus, it is rather quick and easy to understand what their posters mean if we ever cross one on the street.
To me, what makes the poster prominent from others is its intricate colors. The poster has already a simple design, but its colors help to add a sense of beauty. We see the colors of azure, royal blue and cerulean: colors that have a connection to peace and serenity. Aside from that, the darkness of the outer space, even though it is bathed with bright stars, makes the image more vibrant and creates a sense of awe to the viewer.
It is interesting to see how the composition here depicts space at a larger scale than earth. This makes the image of our galaxy the focal point on this poster. While we are turning off our electricity and lights in order to help the earth replenish, we are also inviting the cosmic world to shine beauty into our skies. Our cities’ excessive uses of lights and electricity has hindered our abilities to see the Milky Way from our naked eyes on the ground; thus, the words read on the poster is significant: we may be able to see a different part of our world if we just turn off our electricity for a while. We will see the world above us, a world worth looking at and for.
Overall, the Earth Hour poster here has reached a level of prominence with its design and its meaningful message it has for us. We can turn off our lights, light some scented candles, and watch the sky above us and feel a sense of serenity while helping the earth to replenish. While our efforts may not create much change, they are significant and they count.
