In an effort to offer abused children direct help, especially when they are accompanied with their parents who maybe their abusers, a Spanish organization ANAR, short for the Aid to Children and Adolescents at Risk Foundation created a creative and useful advertisement. It is a motionless picture, but delivers two different messages to adults and children at the same time. When an adult with average height 1.75m or taller looks at the advertisement, he/she will only see a child with sad face and few lines on top saying :”sometimes, child abuse is only visible to the child suffering it.” However, if seen from a child’s visual angle, the advertisement shows the same boy’s face with bruises and a different message around the boy’s shoulder which reads: “if somebody hurts you, phone us and we’ll help you” and ANAR’s telephone number follows.
It is a person-oriented ad because it aims to raise public’s awareness about a group of vulnerable individuals. Also, emotions like adults’ sympathy, reflection or even guilt may be provoked by the little boy’s grieved face and the warning. What is more, mirror effects are adopted because when an adult sees the advertisement and lines, they will know children suffering from violence will not be cheerful, and it is often neglected by abusers. And when children sees the picture, they will see an image of themselves if they are subject to child abuse.
Unlike traditional ads (link 2) which appeal for stopping children abuse by asking aggressors to think before hurting children or asking witnesses to reveal other people’s abuse, this advertisement offer it’s helping hand to the children victims. It is extremely thoughtful and innovative that the producers took a very common scene where children are usually accompanied by their attackers into consideration. Through this picture, children can reach out for help without being known to their abusers. It is of great help and significance to children because if both adults and children can see the hotline, adults may prevent children from making calls and may lead children to more exposure of violence. In this sense, it also inspire and empower kids to defend their own human rights
Nevertheless, despite the ad’s creativity and its positive effects, the advertisement holds controversy after becoming a hit on Youtube. Because once adults are aware of the secret of lenticular images in the advertisement, the effects of the ad will be decreased. Also, toys and even some illegal products can be directly hawked to children through images with the same techniques. (Liszewski, 2013, para.2)
